It was announced that Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona will be put up for auction. On October 26, Newman’s lost masterpiece will go on sale as the centerpiece of a Phillips auction in New York, following a world tour to spark interest.
“Paul Newman’s Newman could easily be seen as the most important watch out there,” said Andrew Shear, a prominent dealer of vintage watches in New York. “I could see it selling for 10 million dollars.”
Newman casually handed over the watch to James Cox, Nell’s boyfriend in 1984. “As far as he was concerned, it was a tool,” Newman said. “I definitely did not have a strong attachment to things.”
In an interview, Mr. Cox said he was helping to repair a treehouse on Newman’s property when the blue-eyed actor approached and asked for the time. “I said, you know, ‘a hair passed a freckle’, or a comment that means” I do not have a watch, “said Mr. Cox, now 52.” To which he replied, “Well, here, here is this watch. If you remember to wear it well, it tells you quite well. ”
And he did it, for the next decade or so, as Mr. Cox used it daily, whether gardening or light construction work, thinking it was really valuable just for him, for sentimental reasons.
Finally, after conversations with watch experts, Mr. Cox shed the secret last June, when he came forward with his decision to auction the clock and give “a large chunk” of revenue, he told the Nell Newman Foundation, who focuses on environmental issues.
